Waterhouse Hopes To Crack Caulfield & Melbourne Cups

June 29th, 2010

Gai Waterhouse is looking to bombard the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup with one of her strongest campaigns yet.

The Caulfield Cup is scheduled to take place on the 16th of October, with the Melbourne Cup on the 2nd of November.

It currently seems Waterhouse is teeing up Once Were Wild, Descarado and Herculian Prince for the double, as they prepare to start in some of Australia’s most prestigious races.

Three-year-old filly Once Were Wild won the AJC Australian Oaks with a solid run over the 2,400 metre distance, and has arrived back at Tulloch Lodge for her spring preparations after a worthy break.

The other two – Descarado and Herculian Prince, the former being the AJCL Australian Derby runner up will hit the tracks earlier having been preparing for slightly longer.

The High Chaparral gelding looks ready for the 2010 Warwick Stakes on the 21st of August while the Kiwi Herculian Prince will most likely start in the 2010 Liston Stakes the week before on the 14th.

Waterhouse will be hoping 2010 is her year, having never won a Caulfield or Melbourne Cup despite her grandiose career as a trainer.

Elsewhere in Waterhouse’s Melbourne Spring Carnival Racing campaign, winner of the Ranvet Stakes Theseo is set to make the big move over to the UK next year for the Ascot Carnival, with a stint in Melbourne key for preparations – specifically a run in the 2010 Cox Plate.
