Can Cummings Make It 13 With A 2010 Melbourne Cup Win?

July 22nd, 2010

The 2010 Melbourne Cup nominations are almost upon us and no one has trained as many winners as the King of the Cups himself Bart Cummings. He attempts his 13th win this year at the 150th Melbourne Cup running, as he returns to the tracks.

Cummings has two potential spring stars in Faint Perfume and So You Think.

Regarded as Australia’s most successful trainer to date, Cummings has not been trackside since April this year after developing pneumonia, but setting himself up for an emphatic Melbourne Cup 2010 campaign the 82-year-old sent a wave of relief through the world of horse racing.

Seen down at the Canterbury track yesterday for the first time since falling ill, Cummings made sure to return on a good day as he saw upcoming three-year-old Markab take out his field.

The Hall of Fame trainer has led 12 Melbourne Cup winners all the way, and is hoping his current stable can offer him another win in the prestigious 150th Melbourne Cup anniversary.

Cummings has two potential spring stars in Faint Perfume and So You Think – both looking to take a share of the Melbourne Cup prize money which is a huge $6 million purse this year.

So You Think could upset the odds as the three-year-old did in 2009 when she won the Group One Cox Plate (2040m) to Manhattan Rain, and is set to defend her title on the 23rd of October before moving on to the 2010 Melbourne Cup field.

Scheduled as Flemington race 7 on the 2nd of November, the Melbourne Cup nominations do not come about until next month, but already Cummings’ Faint Perfume is a favourite among punters.

The three-year-old had a superb Autumn campaign with a scintillating Group One Storm Queen Stakes (2000m) win followed by a solid second-placed run in the Group One AJC Australian Oaks (2400m) – so punters really should keep an eye out for the Sharmadal filly.

The Melbourne Cup 2010 is the highlight of the Australian horse racing calendar, and many are wagering on whether or not it will cement Bart Cummings’ return to health with a 13th Melbourne Cup trophy win.

If you think Cummings will take the biggest share of the prize money this year, or even if you do not, head to now so you can make some money on the spring racing action this year!
