Moudre has surged up the early market odds for the 2010 Caulfield Cup after a superb win at Flemington over the weekend.

Trainer Ciaron Maher is attempting to dampen the rising expectations on the five-year-olds spring campaign after drawing attention by winning the $75,0000 Keith Jackson and Colin Johnston Handicap (1410m) on Saturday.

The Blevic gelding has 2010 Caulfield Cup, Melbourne Cup and Cox Plate nominations, and is now an early favourite at $21 for the Caulfield Cup win.

Champion hoop Craig Williams took the hot seat in Moudre’s first up win over the weekend, and after being impressed by the horse is hoping to stay with him through the spring.

The Handicap win was the five-year-olds first jump since he defeated Module over 1, 800 metres at Flemington, and is shaping up as a strong contender for the 2010 Caulfield Cup prizemoney.

The Warrnambool-trained gelding has won five of his 11 starts amounting $134,950 in prizemoney over the course of his career and is steadily improving.

His five wins have all resulted from his last six starts.

Maher has pencilled in the feature races of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival with the 2010 Caulfield Cup the highlight come October 16.
