Caulfield will play host to its first two Group 1 races of the Spring this Saturday, September 18, which includes the $350,000 2010 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes. The 1400m race will see just one previous Group 1 winner competing for a shot at the title.
While Peter Snowden’s Kidnapped took a convincing first place victory in the Group 1 South Australian Derby, this horse is far from the favourite going into this one. Plenty of experts and punters are getting behind Doubtful Jack as the four-year-old bay gelding is being touted as a can’t lose bet.
This may be the gelding’s first Group 1 appearance, but he is coming into it off a fantastic performance. He took an impressive first place finish in the Group 3 Bobbie Lewis Stakes (1200m) at Flemington earlier this month, and will be seeking his fifth consecutive win. Doubtful Jack is listed at 2.70 odds at Sportsbet. He will be jumping from barrier number ten with Luke Nolen in the saddle.
He will be going up some other tough competitors including Gold Salute in barrier number nine. The nine-year-old took a second place finish in the Toorak Handicap (1600m) and third place in the Emirates Stakes (1600m) last year. Response (6.00 odds) in barrier number five and Sister Madly (8.50 odds) in barrier number seven are also expected to do well.
The 2010 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes will be race number seven on Caulfield’s card, jumping 3:40pm AEST. It will follow the star-studded Underwood Stakes. Be sure to get to SportsBet to place a wager at the above mentioned odds or to check out all of the available odds on the track’s entire card. With the Caulfield Guineas and Thousand Guineas set to jump this Saturday as well, there is no shortage of action.
