More Joyous and Theseo Top 2010 George Main Stakes Final Field

September 23rd, 2010

Eight quality runners have been named in the final field for the Group 1 George Main Stakes. Three early favourites have risen to the top of the pack with two Gai Waterhouse-trained horses holding the best odds to win.

Chris Waller is hoping to break up the Waterhouse strangle hold on the 2010 George Main Stakes with his quality seven-year-old gelding Danleigh ($5.00).

Seven-year-old gelding Theseo ($3.60) has generated plenty of pre-race buzz, and is expected to be the horse to beat. The son of Danewin is fresh off a first place finish in the Chelmsford Stakes (1600m), and is known as a heavyweight of the Waterhouse stable. His decent barrier number four starting position adds to the chances of a first place finish, though, shockingly, the gelding is not the odds on favourite to win.

That honour belongs to stable mate More Joyous (1.75). The four-year-old mare is hoping to become the first mare to win the George Main stakes in nearly 25 years. Her chances are looking strong, as she is fresh off a trio of first place finishes. This includes a barrier training session in early August, the Sheraco Stakes (1100m), and the Theo Marks Stakes earlier on this month. Plenty are expecting a fourth consecutive win for the up and coming mare. She’s starting from barrier number five with Corey Brown in the saddle.

Chris Waller is hoping to break up the Waterhouse strangle hold on the 2010 George Main Stakes with his quality seven-year-old gelding Danleigh ($5.00). The son of Mujahid is known to keep up well with Theseo, and is looking to be in fine form if recent outings are any indication. He took second to Love Conquers All in the recent Missile Stakes (1200m) and third to Metal Bender in the Warwick Stakes (1400m). He’ll need to overcome a number seven barrier draw, but Waller is confident the gelding will be up to the challenge.

The Group 1, $350,000 George Main Stakes will take place this Saturday, September 25 at Randwick racecourse. It will be the main event of a day filled with potentially lucrative action. The day’s events also include the running of the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes. Check out all of the odds at Ladbrokes.com.au before race time on Saturday.
