Spechenka On Way To Caulfield & Melbourne Cup Double

July 13th, 2011

Spechenka will run in tomorrow’s Listed Grafton Cup as a trail for his upcoming Spring Racing Carnival campaign.

The five-year-old gelding claimed victory last start in the Listed Caloundra Cup and connections are hopeful that he will turn out to be a Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup horse later this year.

Trainer Ben Ahrens believes that Spechenka is primed to win tomorrow’s $150,000 race.

“He has had plenty of work and a couple more runs so everything is back on track now,” Ahrens said.

“We were very happy after the Caloundra Cup so it would be great if he could do it again.

“I am much happier with him going into the Grafton Cup than I was going into the Caloundra Cup.

“I think he will go well and will be very hard to hold out.”

Ahrens’ only concern is that the tempo will be set too fast out in front for Spechenka.

“The only thing which puts a win into doubt would be the speed of the race,” Ahrens said.

“Hopefully there is plenty of pressure up front and that will make his task easier.

“Gold In Dubai will always set some sort of pace and it would be nice if something could come out and pressure him a bit otherwise he will get an easy lead and that will set the race up good for him.

“It would be good if something came out and took him on because that would make our chances better.”

A good performance would see Spechenka sent down to Sydney for their Spring Carnival, before heading to Melbourne for a shot at the cups double.

“Provided everything goes reasonably well on Thursday we will probably head down to Sydney for the Spring and aim him at races such as the Newcastle Cup and The Metropolitan,” Ahrens said.

“If he measures up there we would head down to Melbourne and have a crack at the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups if he continues to improve.

“Hopefully we will get to Sydney first and depending on how he goes there will determine whether we press on to Melbourne.”

Spechenka will go for a short freshen up before heading down south for the spring.

“After Thursday he will go out for a week to 10 days,” Ahrens said.

“He doesn’t need too long as he is a horse who is trained out of a yard and is never stabled up.

“He should be reasonably fresh in himself and after 10 days off we will put the work into him again and get him fit for Sydney if we decide to go down that path.”
