Messara Confident of 2014 Coolmore Stud Stakes Success for Scissor Kick

October 29th, 2014

Returning to racing in exceptional form this time in, trainer Paul Messara is confident of maiden success at the highest level of Australian racing for classy colt Scissor Kick in this weekend’s Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.

A proven performer at the highest level, Scissor Kick was rated only an outside chance of success when lining up for the featured Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) on September 13th, but displayed a keen turn of foot to finish second to Hallowed Crown in a photo finish.

Having since placed second to subsequent Group 1 winner Shooting To Win in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on September 27th, Messara told AAP he has no doubt the son of Redoute’s Choice is capable of breaking through for a maiden Group 1 in the 2014 Stud Stakes, believing the running conditions will play directly into the three-year-old’s strengths.

“His last two starts he’s had absolutely no luck. There’s no doubt he should have won a Group One already but the cards didn’t fall our way in the Golden Rose,” Messara said.

“He’s going to run a very strong 1200 metres and I reckon there’s a few that might be a little suspect down the straight.

“It’s not your standard 1200 metres. They’ll be rolling along and I think it will be a tough race. And the tougher it is, I think the better he’ll go.”

Yet to appear competitively in Victoria, Messara said recent work and form displayed by Scissor Kick since arriving south of the border suggests he will have no issue performing in the opposite way of going, confirming he will also sport blinkers for the first time in the Stud Stakes.

“I’m really happy with his wellbeing and often with colts like him, you change their environment and you get that little bit more out of them,” Messara added.

“Coming down to Melbourne has certainly got him on the toe and switched him right on, and we’re also going with the blinkers for the first time in this race.

“So that’s a couple of things I think might just sharpen him up a bit.”

Claiming three race wins and two closely-run second place finishes over his six race career so-far, Scissor Kick beat just one runner home in the Australian Turf Club Handicap (1200m) on debut in March before immediately returning to the spelling paddock.

Winning the More Than Ready Handicap (1250m) with ease first-up on Jull 23rd, the colt out of Back Pass completed a successful transition to black type racing when winning both the Listed Rosebud (1200m) and Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) in the lead-up to the Golden Rose.

Allocated barrier 8, Scissor Kick is currently available at generous odds of $15 for success or $4.40 to finish in the places in the 2014 Coolmore Stud Stakes with leading online bookie
