Dunaden won the 2011 Melbourne Cup by the very narrowest of margins at Flemington Racecourse yesterday November 1, 2011.

The French stayer won the race by millimetres ahead of the fast finishing Red Cadeaux.

Lucas Cranach rounded out the placings in third, while Americain ran on well for fourth.

Dunaden’s owner Sheik Fahad al Thani, who himself is reasonably new to racing, was overwhelmed with joy after the race.

“It is massive, I don’t think there is a bigger race to win,” Sheikh Fahad said.

“I am truly lucky to have done it in my second year, many people spend a lifetime trying to win this race.”

Jockey Christophe Lemaire was given the winning Melbourne Cup ride aboard Dunaden after Craig Williams lost his appeal against a ten meeting suspension he received a week ago.

“I am very thankful for Christophe and I am sorry for Craig,” Sheikh Fahad said.

“Christophe has a cool head, he walked the track and got a few pointers and he executed it perfectly.

“He’s a very calm man, he didn’t press the button too early … a magnificent ride.”

Dunaden won a whopping $3.6 million in prize money for his 2011 Melbourne Cup win.

Bart Cummings is hoping to win his 13th Melbourne Cup title with German stayer Illo come the $6.2 million race at Flemington on November 1, 2011.

Illo arrived at the Cummings stable two weeks ago from Europe and the trainer feels the horse is in with a big Melbourne Cup winning chance.

“I think we’re in it with a chance,” Cummings said.

“This German horse is getting better all the time. He’s stronger than he looks.

“The way he’s going, I’m quite happy.”

The five-year-old has continued to show promise in his work at Moonee Valley.

“The other horse is a good worker and he (Illo) kept up with him,” he said.

“He’s feeling good, he’s putting on weight and he’s working strongly.

“He’s got to work strongly, or he can’t get two miles.”

Cummings’ only worry is the fact Illo hasn’t ran a race in months, however, all will be revealed when the entire lines up against Americain in this Saturday’s Moonee Valley Cup.

“He hasn’t raced for three months, so I’m not sure how he’ll go,” he said.

“The information I got from Germany was to do our own thing, go our own way, use our own methods.”

“If a German horse can win the Arc (in France), maybe a German horse can win the Melbourne Cup,” Cummings added.

December Draw has drawn perfectly in the barriers for the 2011 Caulfield Cup that will take place at Caulfield Racecourse this Saturday October 15, 2011.

The five-year-old gelding has drawn barrier 11 for the $2.5 million race, but will jump from gate 9 should the emergencies not gain a start.

Trainer Mark Kavanagh expressed his relief after the draw was conducted yesterday.

“I’m pretty happy with that,” Kavanagh said.

“He’s not the biggest bloke around, but you just see using his speed to getting into a good position from there.”

Jockey Michael Rodd made it clear he would try to get across early and settle forward in the 2011 Caulfield Cup.

“He gets out of the barriers really well so I don’t want to restrict him at what he’s good at,” Rodd said.

“The tempo of the race will dictate where we go.

“(But) he’s obviously going to land in the first half of the field.

“I’ll be looking to switch him off on Saturday and give him every chance to run the distance.”

Grahame Begg has confirmed that Secret Admirer will target the $3 million Cox Plate on Saturday October 22, 2011, at Moonee Valley Racecourse.

Secret Admirer won her last start in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap at Randwick last Saturday and her trainer feels she has pulled up well enough for a Cox Plate 2011 start.

“We made the decision (to go to the Cox Plate) after a few days, we wanted to see how she came through (the Epsom Handicap), let the dust settle,” Begg said.

“We weighed everything up, opposition, track conditions, Moonee Valley against Flemington and that is the way we decided to go.

“The (other option) was the Myer Classic on Derby Day, it is weight-for-age for fillies and mare.

“It is Group one and (also) the Emirates Stakes on the last day.”

It will be the four-year-old mare’s first run outside of New South Wales, however, Begg is unconcerned by the change in track direction.

“I think some Sydney horses seem to handle Moonee Valley better than Caulfield, so I didn’t think that was an issue,” he said.

“Track surface is the most important thing for her, she raced a few weeks ago at Rosehill on a firm surface and didn’t stretch out like she did last Saturday in the Epsom, so that was a huge consideration.

“We know Flemington can get firm if they don’t get any rain so that had a major bearing on our decision.”

The lightly raced Secret Admirer has won three of her eight career starts and has accrued more than $620,000 in prize money.

Secret Admirer is currently paying odds of $17 to win the Cox Plate at Luxbet.

Chase The Rainbow is due to run in the 2011 Stutt Stakes at Moonee Valley this Friday night September 30, 2011, after being scratched from the Caulfield Guineas Prelude at Caulfield last weekend due to the firm track.

Trainer Rick Hore-Lacy is hopeful Chase The Rainbow can produce a win ahead of the Caulfield Guineas on October 8, 2011.

“He’s a very promising horse. If you look at his run at Flemington he just motored past some good horses and there aren’t many who can run sectionals like that,” Hore-Lacy said.

“I scratched him last weekend because he’s won two races on the Geelong synthetic and I didn’t want to risk him on a Good (2) which was like concrete.

“The mile at Moonee Valley will suit him.”

Chase The Rainbow has won two of his four starts and has accrued more than $60,000 in prize money.

Trainer David Vandyke believes that Lamasery is capable of travelling the entire 2,400 metres of the Colin Stephen Handicap at Rosehill Racecourse this Saturday September 24, 2011, despite his pedigree indicating he shouldn’t get further than a mile.

“If I look at his pedigree we’re in trouble,” Vandyke said.

“(But) if I look at the horse (on face value) I think he’ll run 2400 (metres) easily.

“On breeding he shouldn’t get further than a mile (1600m).

“(But) he’s got such an economical action that he does relax in his races.

“He’s the sort of horse I could work just over 12 seconds to the furlong (200m) and you’d think he could go around at that pace all day.”

Lamasery will jump from barrier seven in the 2011 Colin Stephen Handicap and will carry the top weight of 57 kilograms.

“In his 14 starts he’s never had a horse go past him in the straight,” Vandyke said.

“Anything that has beaten him has been in front of him.

“That holds him in good stead for this Saturday.”

Trainer Peter Moody is still unsure whether or not to target the 2011 Caulfield Guineas with Moment Of Change, despite his uncontested win at Sandown Racecourse today.

Moment Of Change won the Hyland Racing Colours Handicap ahead of a handy field in what was just his second ever race start.

The Barely A Moment gelding won his debut start in country Victoria last month by an incredible ten lengths.

“He’s a good horse I don’t know how good,” Moody said following his latest win.

“The sky’s the limit but we’re not going to get ahead of ourselves.”

Moody said the Caulfield Guineas Prelude next weekend was “too soon” for Moment Of Change, who is having his first horse racing preparation.

“If I went a little bit in the deep end it would probably be the Stutt Stakes (September 30th),” he said.

“We’re not busting a gut to get him in the Caulfield Guineas.

“He’s got a lot of potential.”

“You just don’t know how far he’s going to get this prep.

“I think he’s in the top bracket but whether it’s this time round is questionable.”

Bloodstock manager and co-owner Rob Slade said he is willing to listen to Moody’s advice concerning the $1 million Caulfield Guineas.

“P.G. Moody has the trainer’s licence not me,” he said.

Jockey Linda Meech rode Moment Of Change to his latest victory as Luke Nolen is currently serving a suspension for careless riding aboard Kulgrinda in last weekend’s McEwan Stakes.

“He’s a lot better, today when I asked him to go he went,” Meech said.

“He was a little racehorse today.

“He was probably entitled to get tired after the whip.”

Meech believes we haven’t yet seen the best of Moment Of Change.

“He wasn’t at his top that’s for sure,” she said.

Crowd favourite Alcopop will have his first Melbourne start of the sprint in the 2011 Dato Tan Chin Tam Stakes at Moonee Valley Racecourse this Saturday September 10, 2011.

The Jeune gelding won his last start at Morphettville, and trainer Jake Stephens believes he has the form to win the 2011 Dato Tan Chin Tam Stakes.

“He’s obviously improved off that first one and winning that last run was really exciting,” Stephens said.

“He seems to have pulled up well from it.

“Once he’s been in… that good form early on he seems to be able to keep going and condition wise he’s holding it so hopefully that’s a good sign.

“It’s going to be interesting to see what he can do.

“Off that last run he’s right up there I’d say.”

Stephens is yet to map out a solid schedule for Alcopop’s upcoming Melbourne spring carnival, however he is nominated for the 2011 Melbourne Cup, 2011 Caulfield Cup and 2011 Cox Plate.

“Probably in two or three weeks he’ll be coming back and we’ll see what’s around,” Stephens said.

Peter Snowden has announced that Sepoy looks better than ever ahead of his second-up run in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes at Flemington Racecourse this Saturday September 3, 2011.

The three-year-old colt performed brilliantly in his spring debut in the Listed Vain Stakes three weeks ago and his trainer believes his has improved even further from that run.

“He’s a bit better since his first-up run,” Snowden said.

“Fitness-wise he’s where we want him to be.”

“He gets better through his preparation.

“He didn’t have a gut-buster first-up and then had an easy week, but the last couple of weeks he’s got going.”

Sepoy’s main goal of the spring will be the $500,000 Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington on October 29, 2011.

“His preparation is being timed so he will peak for his ultimate goal, which is the Coolmore Stakes at Flemington on Derby Day,” Snowden said.

Sepoy won all three legs of the Blue Diamond earlier this year, as well as the $3.5 million Golden Slipper.

The three-year-old Elusive Quality colt has won six of his seven race starts and has accrued close to $3 million in prize money.

Jimmy Choux and Scarlett Lady will compete against each other for the informal title of New Zealand’s best race horse this spring, as friendly rivalry between the horses’ trainers continues to mount.

The two horses are due to meet in this weekend’s Makfi Challenge Stakes at Hastings in New Zealand.

Scarlett Lady’s trainer, Graeme Rogerson, believes his mare has the edge over the talented Jimmy Choux.

“By all accounts, Graeme Rogerson has claimed Scarlett Lady is the best horse in New Zealand,” Jimmy Choux’s trainer John Bary said.

“We will see how good Rogie’s judgment is.”

Bary is extremely happy with Jimmy Choux’s progress since returning from a lengthy winter spell.

“Jimmy Choux is right where I want him,” Bary said.

“He’s grown, he’s about 16.2 (hands high) now and he’s put on a few more kilos.

“He’s had a nice long three months of good slow work getting him to where I want him to be.

“He missed a trial because they cancelled them, which is the only worry, but we’ve got enough gallops into him and I think he has the class factor.

“He might only have to be 90 to 95 per cent to beat that field. Class takes you a long way.”

With Jimmy Choux’s main aim being the $3 million Cox Plate in October, Bary is considering giving the four-year-old a light lead-up to the race.

“If he blows like hell and I think he needs another run we can always run in the Windsor Park Plate (on September 17), but if I’m happy he might just have an exhibition gallop that day and then go straight into the Group 1 Spring Classic (formerly Kelt Capital Stakes) on October 1 before we go to Australia,” Bary said.

Scarlett Lady, on the other hand, will begin her Australian spring carnival next month in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.
